Can I Replace My Old Intercom System?

The answer is yes! There are replacement parts for most intercom systems such as M&S and NuTone that can be repaired in order to get the system up and working again. You can also choose to totally update the system to incorporate it with today’s technology and needs for your household.

Fixing Old Intercom Systems

Repair

Most systems such as M&S and NuTone offer replacement parts for their systems. You can check with the manufacturer directly to see if they carry the parts that need to be replaced; or you can contact us to order and replace the parts for you. If you are unsure of how to repair your intercom, please call a professional as to avoid damage to your intercom system, property or yourself.

If you are happy with the way your old intercom system currently works, and its features, you can simply repair it. However, if you would like to update your system to better serve your household needs using today’s technology, you may want to look into either retrofitting or replacing your old intercom system.

Retro Fit

There are several new intercom systems that offer retrofit options. This means you can use the wiring you already have in your walls, with your previous intercom using 3, 4, 6 or 8 wires. If you are retrofitting a newer intercom into your old space, you will not need to cut any more holes in the drywall since the newer systems are smaller than the old ones.

These retrofit moldings fit the holes for the new components where your old system was installed. Depending on the number of wires your system has will determine the model of intercom you can replace it with. Check with the manufacturer to see the different options that are available for installing a retro fitted home intercom system.

Replace Old Intercom Equipment

Another option for replacing your older NuTone or M&S Intercom systems is to completely rip out all of the wires from the wall and start over with a new system using Cat5 (ethernet) wires. The systems that run on Cat5 have the advantage of being internet compatible, which allows you more usable features.

For example, there is an intercom system that has a video door station which can be viewed from inside the home, or anywhere using a smart device.  Or, perhaps you want to listen to your favorite playlist in multiple rooms in the house.

Handling Home Intercom Wiring Is Dangerous!

When removing all of the existing wires from your old home intercom system and replacing them with new Cat5 wires, make sure you hire a professional to ensure the job is done correctly and safely.

Since adding Cat5 wires is more labor-intensive than just retrofitting an older system, you will need to budget the cost with the selected features before you start tearing into your walls.
