Keep Your Home Disinfected
During this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has become obvious how important it is to keep your home disinfected. While we are all looking for the ever-elusive Clorox wipes and Lysol, rest assured there are other ways to make sure our home is clean and germ-free.
Make sure you clean surfaces, such as countertops, tables, floors and bathroom fixtures, with soap and water and then use a disinfectant. Some daily items to clean include: tables, floors, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, sinks, remotes, cell phones. Also, make sure you take your shoes off before entering the home.
A central vacuum will help get germs and allergens from within your home. The canister is mounted outside the home (usually in the garage) so that the dirt is taken away from your house and emptied outside of it. This is especially helpful to people with allergies, as all upright vacuums simply circulate the dust particles back into the air.
Quarantine the Sick
If someone in your home has been sick, make sure they keep a separate bedroom and bathroom from the rest of the family. It is best to keep them in their room, and not allow them to come into the kitchen or family room. Make sure other family members are not using the sick person’s bedroom or bathroom and that extensive cleaning and disinfecting happens in the spaces where they are located. Deliver food and supplies to the sick person as needed; and when coming in contact with them, make sure you are wearing disposable gloves and a face mask. Thoroughly clean all items that leave the quarantined space. When possible, use disposable silverware, plates and cups when serving them to avoid contamination.
It is best to keep all dirty clothes in one location. Use disposable gloves when handling dirty clothes and be careful not to shake them before placing them into the washing machine. Use the warmest setting the garment will allow when laundering your items. Make sure you regularly disinfect clothes hampers as well.
Don’t forget to wipe down the electronics you use on a daily basis (phones, remotes, gaming systems). For electronics, you will want to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning items such as smartphones, tablets, computer screens, keyboards and remote controls. If there is no guidance available, you can use an alcohol-based spray or wipe that contains at least 70% alcohol, and then dry the surface thoroughly. You can also consider putting a wipeable cover on your electronics.
As we all hope to be moving forward from this COVID-19 pandemic soon, we must keep in mind these tips for disinfecting and cleaning your areas at home and work. Continue to wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, wear masks in public and keep hand sanitizer in the car and on your person as needed.
